Privacy Policy
Last updated: 28 May 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how NTRA Pty Ltd (ACN 697 386 351) ("we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, holds, discloses, and protects your personal information when you use Lifer, our bird-watching app for iOS and Android, and related services. We are based in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, and we handle personal information in accordance with the Australian Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).
By using Lifer, you agree to the collection and use of your information as described in this policy. If you do not agree, please don't use the app. If you have questions, contact us at privacy@liferbirding.com.
1. Who we are
Lifer is operated by NTRA Pty Ltd, an Australian company based in Newcastle, NSW. For any privacy matter, including access, correction, complaints, or deletion requests, contact privacy@liferbirding.com.
2. What personal information we collect
We collect only what we need to run the app and give you a good experience. The kinds of personal information we collect and hold include:
Information you provide
- Account details: your name, email address, and chosen username when you create an account.
- Profile information: a profile photo and any optional details you add.
- Bird captures: the photos you take, the species identified, and the date and location of each sighting.
- Friend connections: if you use Lifer's social features, the other users you connect with as friends.
- Communications: the content of any message you send us.
Information collected automatically
- Location data: precise location, with your permission, attached to your captures and used for nearby-species and map features. You can turn location access off in your device settings, though some features won't work without it.
- Device and usage data: device model, operating system, app version, IP address, and information about how you use the app, collected for security, troubleshooting, and analytics.
- Diagnostic data: crash reports and performance data to help us find and fix problems.
Camera and photos
Lifer uses your device camera and photo library, with your permission, so you can capture and identify birds. Lifer does not use your device microphone, and does not record or process audio.
3. How we use your information
We use your personal information to:
- create and manage your account and let you sign in
- identify birds from your photos and build your personal collection
- run gamification features — streaks, badges, leaderboards, and progress
- let you connect with friends and see each other's bird captures
- show nearby species and community map features
- send you notifications you've opted into
- respond to your questions and provide support
- keep the app secure, prevent fraud and abuse, and fix problems
- understand how the app is used so we can improve it
- comply with our legal obligations
We only collect and use your information where we have a lawful basis to do so, and we don't use it for purposes you wouldn't reasonably expect without telling you first.
4. How bird identification works (AI)
When you capture a bird, your photo is sent to third-party image-recognition providers, located in the United States, that identify the most likely species. Your photo and limited related data are processed by these providers solely to return an identification result.
Bird identifications are suggestions only and may not always be correct. They do not make any decision that significantly affects your legal rights or interests.
5. Friends and social features
Lifer lets you connect with other users as friends so you can see each other's bird captures. If you use these features:
- Your username and profile photo are visible to users you connect with.
- Captures you share through social features — including the species, date, and location of each sighting — may be visible to your friends.
- To protect sensitive wildlife, the precise location of sightings of threatened or endangered species may be obscured or generalised when shown to others.
You choose who you connect with, and you can manage or remove friend connections in the app. Think carefully before sharing captures whose location you'd prefer to keep private.
6. Advertising
Lifer may display advertising to support the free version of the app. We use Google AdMob to serve ads.
We serve non-personalised (contextual) ads only. This means ads are based on the general context of the app, not on a profile of your interests or behaviour. To deliver and measure ads and to prevent fraud, AdMob collects limited data such as your IP address, approximate (coarse) location, device information, and ad-interaction data. We do not use your data, or allow advertising partners to use it, to build a behavioural profile of you for interest-based targeting.
If we ever decide to offer personalised (interest-based) advertising in future, we will update this policy and, where required, ask for your consent before doing so. You can also reset or limit your device's advertising identifier at any time in your device settings.
7. When and with whom we share information
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not allow advertisers, data brokers, or other third parties to extract it for their own commercial purposes.
We share personal information only with service providers who help us operate the app, and only so far as they need it to perform their service for us. These include:
| Provider | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Google Firebase / Google Cloud | App backend, authentication, database, file storage, analytics |
| Third-party image-recognition providers (US) | Bird image identification |
| Google Maps Platform | Map and location features |
| Google AdMob | Non-personalised advertising |
| Sentry | Crash reporting and diagnostics |
These providers are bound to protect your information and use it only for the purposes we instruct. We may also disclose personal information where required by law, to protect our rights or the safety of others, or in connection with a sale or transfer of our business (in which case we'll require the recipient to honour this policy).
8. Overseas disclosure
Some of our service providers store or process personal information outside Australia. In particular, the providers listed above (including Google and Sentry) are likely to process your information in the United States and other countries where they or their sub-processors operate. By using Lifer, you acknowledge that your personal information may be processed overseas. We take reasonable steps to ensure these providers handle your information consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles.
9. How long we keep your information
We keep your personal information for as long as your account is active and as long as needed to provide the app. When you delete your account:
- We permanently delete your login, profile details (name, email, username, photo), saved location data, capture photos, badges, and leaderboard entries.
- We retain your capture records (species, date, and location) in an anonymised form, no longer linked to you, to keep community statistics and species data accurate.
- Operational data such as crash diagnostics and server logs is retained for up to 30 days, then automatically deleted.
You can request a full erasure, including your anonymised capture records, at any time. See our account deletion page for the full process, or email privacy@liferbirding.com.
10. How we protect your information
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your personal information, including encryption in transit, access controls, and app-integrity checks. No system is completely secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security, but we take protection seriously and review our practices regularly.
11. Children
Lifer is designed for and directed at adults aged 18 and over. It is not intended for children, and we have not opted into Google Play's Designed for Families program. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If we become aware that we have collected information from a person under 18, we will take reasonable steps to delete it. If you believe we hold information about someone under 18, contact privacy@liferbirding.com.
12. Your privacy rights
Under the Australian Privacy Act, you have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you
- Correct information that is inaccurate or out of date
- Delete your account and data (see our account deletion page)
- Withdraw consent for processing that relies on your consent, such as location access
To exercise any of these, email privacy@liferbirding.com. We'll respond within a reasonable period, normally within 30 days.
13. How to make a complaint
If you believe we have mishandled your personal information or breached the Australian Privacy Principles, please contact us first at privacy@liferbirding.com so we can try to resolve it. We'll acknowledge your complaint and respond within a reasonable period, normally within 30 days.
If you're not satisfied with our response, you can lodge a complaint with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au or by phone on 1300 363 992.
14. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we'll change the "Last updated" date at the top, and for material changes we'll provide a more prominent notice in the app or by email. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
